New Notebook!!!

I finally bought myself a new laptop!! Last year I made the mistake of buying a laptop on ebay. I had bought a brand new Dell (I think 1501) sealed box with a 1 year warranty thru Dell. The laptop worked great until about a month or so ago. I had RAM added because it was so slow & Frank knew a guy at work that can do it cheap, so I had it done. It seems like ever since then the laptop went down hill. I kept getting "the blue screen of death"
Why am I getting this?Blue Screen. WHY?
At first it didn't happen all the time, then all of a sudden it started happening daily, sometimes a few times a day. But other than that the laptop worked great.
Then I started getting this screen My laptop is falling apart :(
This screen would come on as soon as I turned the laptop on. It says the battery cannot be identified & the system will be unable to charge. I would push any key & the laptop would start up fine. Another odd thing is the battery holds the charge fine, the clock, the date is set right. I just don't know what is going on, it was time for a new laptop.
I did a little research online to get an idea of what I wanted & went off to Best Buy, PC Richards & Circuit City. Best Buy was the first stop & is where I decided on the HP Pavilion dv2000 My new toy!!! My sister has the same laptop & she is happy with it. Of course they were all out & was expecting it the next day on the shipment. Now I'm very impatient & don't want to wait so I we went to PC Richards. They had it but we must of read the price wrong (you will see why in a minute). It was listed for $999 with $200 "mail in" rebates so it would be the same as Best Buy in the end. Best Buy had it for $800, the rebate was instant. The man said they were mail in rebates so we said "screw that" and left. So we went to Circuit City & they didn't have it either but they were selling it for about the same price as Best Buy. Being I wanted this laptop & wouldn't be able to pick it up the next day at Best Buy I went back to PC Richards. I figured I'll just have to do the mail in rebates to get my $200 back, it will all be the same price in the end, right? Wrong!! Come to find out we read the tag all wrong. Yeah there are 2 rebates but that was on top of the $850 (marked down from $999) I had to pay up front. I paid $850 (only $50 more than Best Buy) AND I get $200 in rebates, one was for $50 the other is $150!! So in the end I'm paying $650 for the same laptop I would of paid $800 for!!!! I'm so glad I went back!! So funny how things work out.
Now I just have to get things transferred to this laptop & get used to Vista. I really like how it's nice & small. It is much smaller than the Dell so I can bring it with me. The screen is so much nicer too, nice & clear. I can't believe the BIG difference in memory compared to my Dell that is only a year old. The Dell is a 60GB & this HP is 160GB. I know Vista takes more memory but that is really a big difference. My 160GB is kind of on the low to average side too, many went up to 200+. The other thing that was important was the option to add more RAM, it comes with 2GB & can add up to 4GB. This time not have "some guy" do it. I also really like the web cam, I'd like to spy on my dogs while I'm at work to see what they do all day. I have no clue how to do that yet.
I just wanted to write a post since I haven't blogged in a while. I'm gonna be very busy the next couple weeks, I'm doing my first flea market on April 6th & April 20th. I will be in Brooklyn NY at the Brooklyn Flea, I will post again about it. So I'll be busy getting items ready for it.

When I go to someones page on Blogger/Blogspot I would get redirected to a page like this. It didn't happen to every page on Blogger but it happened often & I could never figure out why! The blog would come up but then a second later, after the page fully loads BAM! it would redirect & I couldn't read the person's blog. I've tried googling for the answer for a while but never could find the answer. It only happened on my laptop, it didn't happen on my cell phone or my PC. When I didn't find the answer I would just let it go & do something else. Then a few days later I would try & read a blog>get redirected>google for the answer again>didn't get the answer & gave up. Well tonight was different!!! I went to a blog, got redirected, googled.....but this time I got the answer!!!!

On the right of the Google search there is a "What's this", I never clicked on it before, I guess I should of. Well when you open that it says something like:
"This page .................... This program can be uninstalled from the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs. Look for the application named "Browser Address Error Redirector" "URL Assistant" or "GoogleAFE"

Well, I went to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Change/Remove Programs>Which will have the list of "Currently Installed Programs"
All the way towards the bottom was "URL Assistant". I removed that, deleted cookies, files, history & all that good stuff, restarted my computer (not sure if it was necessary but I did) & it doesn't happen!! (Knock on wood).
I am so happy!! The few blogs I could never read before I can now!! It seems like it happens to Dell computers using Internet Explorer. I'm just so happy, this has been MONTHS of annoyance!

Still here.

I've been pretty neglectful when it comes to blogging. I haven't had much going on here-- honestly, I've just been pretty lazy.
Last week I went to "The Morning Show with Mike & Juliet" with my little sister that is home from college. It's a pretty new show so it isn't really well known. It is on Fox (which is channel 5 in NY) & it's on a 9am (eastern time).

Juliet from The Morning ShowMe & my sisterMe & my Sister

We had a good time, it was nice spending time with her before she left again for school in Boston.

I'm also planning on buying a new camera. I've been spending a lot of time on Flickr & have really fell in love with taking pictures. I have a FujiFilm S5100 & altho it takes good pictures (mostly good outdoor pics) I never want to bring it anywhere because it's so big & bulky. I want a camera I can have in my bag all the time & I don't like to carry huge bags. I also don't really know how to use it well, it is always set on Auto. I love electronics & I'm always getting bored with what I have--so what I am doing is selling my AT&T/Cingular Pocket PC with a few extras to pay for my new camera. Since I bought my iPhone I really have no need for it anymore, it has just been sitting there. This is really hard for me to do because I LOVE that phone but it is really silly for me to keep. The camera I am planning on buying is the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W80. I've posted in an Etsy forum & it seemed like the CyberShot is very popular, I also have a friend that uses a CyberShot. But what really sold me was the Camera Finder on Flickr. I'm really clueless about cameras so I wanted a point & shoot that's small, narrow, has a large LCD screen, takes good macro & indoor shots. After I figured out which cameras had those specs I look at the photos those cameras took--when I looked at the photos from the W80 I was sold. I also just listed another phone on ebay, a Motorola Razr V3. Maybe I'll use what I make from that to pay for the camera's memory card & any other accessories needed for it like a car charger & a screen protector. I haven't decided if I was going to sell my Fuji S5100, maybe if there is some other electronic I want!

Well that's all for now. I'm off from work the next 2 days & hope to get some sewing done. I'm planning on having a new category in my etsy shop, Pet Clothes! I have a little Yorkie Shea & she needs jackets during the winter, I like to keep her hair short. I would also like to make another quilt for my bed. The fabric store around here is down sizing & it looks like they haven't bought any new fabric lately. I'm thinking of cutting up all my old scraps & making it into a quilt. I have so much I've saved & it continues to grow, I need to make some use of it & a quilt would be perfect. That's all for now.

My First Quilt

My First Quilt
Originally uploaded by JT Stitches

I guess I'm kind of backwards. Usually when people learn to sew they start with a quilt. Well, I've been sewing for about 2 years & I'm now just making my first quilt. For Christmas EVERY year I get my grandma knee highs. Maybe 10 years ago I bought my grandma something different for Xmas & she wasn't very happy, she said she doesn't buy them because she knows I get them for her for Christmas--so every year I get her knee highs. Well, this year I really wanted to make her something special & I thought a quilt would be just perfect. Me & my Aunt met at Joann Fabrics to pic out colors & ideas. The picture isn't close, the colors are sage, ivory, forest green & an ivy pattern fabric with an ivory back round. The middle block is an applique with a shamrock & the middle is a picture we did last year on Thanksgiving with all us grand kids & my grandparents in the middle. This was actually my 1st applique to--well, I've done appliques before but on my embroidery machine, big difference. Of course I waited until last minute & was still up at 2 am trying to finish-- I had to be up at my parents house for 10 am breakfast :). I am so hooked now, I can't wait to make another one! I have a "favorite" on flickr that I love! I really love how she use all solid colors. It's funny that something as simple as using only solid colors could look so beautiful.
Today I might be going to Joann Fabric! Unfortunately it's about 40 minutes away from me so I don't get to go often--maybe that's a good thing because if it was close I'd be there all the time & I'd be spending $$ all the time. Today I'll be in that area so hopefully I'll be able to stop by. I'll be with Frank & he won't want to go but I'm sure gonna try! Wish me luck!

Just venting!

I'm just venting here.
I'm the type of person that waits last minute for everything! I don't know why I do it I just do. This is my first Holiday/Christmas selling on Etsy. I've been selling on eBay for a while & I know how the holidays get. Etsy has been pretty slow for me (compared to selling on eBay) which I like. If I didn't work a full time job & selling was my only income I wouldn't be too happy. When I was selling on eBay there were times it was more of a "job" I had to do, I would get a ton of orders at once so I had no life, it was *work -> come home & sew -> sleep -> & do it all over again*. When I came to Etsy, sales were slower but I was able to enjoy sewing & creating new things...plus, I made a little extra money to pay for my hobby....Etsy was perfect for me!
The holidays are here & I was so NOT ready. I guess since we've been having such beautiful weather here in NY it didn't feel like Christmas was coming. If I was smart I would of started my own personal Christmas gifts before Thanksgiving that way I would be able to have lots of things listed in my Etsy shop for the Holiday shoppers. But nooooo....of course I didn't. I didn't even start. So now what I had to do is remove a bunch of listings, especially the ones that take a really long time to make. I still have the already made items listed & of course my favorite, the "iCozy". I have to keep my iCozy up for those people that's buying an iPhone, iTouch or iPod for for someone for Christmas--it's a perfect match! I'm really mad at myself for having to remove things but I would really like to make a few of my gifts. So at the moment I'm finishing up a few orders I did get & hope I'll finish my Christmas gifts in time. Knowing me I'll be up Christmas eve & just starting!
Thanks for letting me vent!

Shea's Hair Cut

I've been planning on making a new item for JT Stitches after the holidays--but now that my baby has short hair I might have to start ASAP! I have a lot of projects to get done before Christmas. I have so many ideas floating around in my head one being a quilt I'm going to make for my grandmother. I've never made a quilt before so I decided to make a "practice" quilt for my big dog Lexi. I really wish I started earlier on Christmas gifts but I'm so last minute I'll probably be up December 24th sewing my little heart out.

Google Search result

I was doing a Google search for JTstitches & I came across this page http://geeksugar.com/753666 . I had no idea someone did this about my iPhone/iPod Cozy.

iPhone with iCase

I think this is really cool! I don't care about the not so nice comments, I'm only paying attention to the nice comments. I've never heard about this site before, I need to check it out when I have a minute.

Ya gotta love Google!

My Sewing Room

I like seeing pictures of peoples work area & then look at their shop to see the items they sell, it's pretty cool. For a while now I've been planning on getting some pictures up of my sewing room on flickr. So today there was an Etsy thread about peoples work area so I got up off the couch, took pictures & uploaded them to flickr. I live in a small one bedroom apartment. When I first started sewing 2 years ago I only had one machine, very few notions, fabric...& had my set up in the living room. It was all good until I fell in love with this hobby & got better--my supplies started building up & I had to move into the dining room which I made my sewing room. My dining room, A.K.A Sewing room, has 3 machines, a long banquet table next to my old dining room table, lots of fabric in bins, shelves of supplies, notions & other various sewing stuff. I also have a 2 big narrow bins of fabric to slide under my bed & my seasonal fabric (holidays) are kept at my parents house. I can't wait to get a house! I already told my boyfriend that the house has to have a sewing room, and I told my Dad to get ready to build a wide wrap around table, shelves & an ironing board I can fold up to the wall when I'm not using it (my ironing board takes up so much space in that little room, I don't have it out in these pictures)...I have it all my ideas in my head.

Help starting a website...cheap!

Are you looking to have your own website but you don't want to spend lots of money (like I did at first)? I'm not the best computer person in the world & I've signed up for so many different things & spend lots of money. I'm sure there are other ways to have your own website that might be better than what I'm about to tell you, but so far I like this the best. Let me give you a quick history....I started selling on ebay & got so sick of all the fees so I *thought* if I started my own website I could sell my stuff & not have to pay ebay so much. Well, I found out that wasn't working like I had hoped. I paid $90 for the year to get web hosting & the domain for a year with PowWeb. The templates they give are horrible & make the site look so cheap. Your site will never come up in searches so you would need to pay extra for that through google or yahoo. I used Google Adwords & had my fee at $10 a month (which is pretty low). In the end I was still making most of my sales through ebay & was paying all that money for nothing. I then found Etsy. Since their fees are so low & I wasn't doing that great with a website, I cancelled both my ebay shop & my website. Now that I gave a quick history let me tell you what I do & know....
Domain...First thing to do is go to Go Daddy & sign up for a domain name(yourname.com). This is totally optional but it's $6.99-$9.99 a year & you can have it forward to any page you want & your customers will always find you. It's good if you have business cards or pens printed with a URL & you decide to change your homepage, you can point "yourpage.com" anywhere you want. I learned the hard way--I have a bunch of pens that have my ebay shop's URL & I don't have an ebay store anymore, so the pens are useless. Go Daddy also give you an email account free with the domain like "Jen@JTstitches.com" that you can forward to your regular email address (yahoo, aol, gmail...). Again, you can change it at any times to forward to any email address you want in case you don't have Verizon or Comcast anymore & your pens have your no longer working email address (again, learned the hard way).
Web hosting...One free site web hosting site is Geocities. I have been using Geocities for a while but I don't exactly love the huge yahoo ads that are along the side (My geocities site) pushing my page over. Since it does have those ads my web page comes up in Yahoo/Google searches which is a very good thing. You need to have a yahoo account to sign up for geocities which is also free. Another site I just signed up for Free Webs, another free web hosting site. I like this site because you don't see any ads on the page. The bad part is--since there aren't any ads, the site doesn't come up in searches either (My FreeWebs Page). Go Daddy gives you one free "Starter/Parked Page" but you can't use your own HTML code, you need to use their templates, and you only get one page. You could ask Go Daddy's customer service about using your own HTML but the person I spoke to said no.
HTML...All the sites I've mentioned have templates for you to use & are as easy as following directions like "add picture here, browse computer to upload picture" "enter text here"& you don't need to have any knowledge of HLML stuff...but I personally don't like the way they look. If you already have a HTML code (like I did) & have *basic* knowledge of HTML you can just put it in yourself. One site I found that have many different graphic designers is at Merchant Moms. Merchant Moms is a web hosting service but they have many graphic designers listed. I personally have never used them but you can see their work. Most of them have premade templates that are very reasonably priced & look really good. If you look through their sites you can find really cute premade web designs priced as low as $25. I believe most of the designers have the templates set up to only use with Merchant Moms hosting so you would need to ask that specific web designer. I will most likely use one of them at some point when I'm looking to give my site a new look. What you do is get the HTML code (from who ever you decide to use) & add links, pictures...to it--like I said, you need to have basic HTML knowledge to do this. If you have the time to learn this there is a ton of information on the web, google "Learn HTML". Learn the basic, open notepad to save information & codes, and practice using a geocities page--but this is an entire different topic & maybe I'll talk about it when I learn it good enough myself.
Shopping Carts... I've never used any other shopping carts besides Paypal so I can't comment on anything else. Paypal Carts are extremely easy to use--you fill in the information "Item Name", "Price", "Currency", "Shipping", you get the idea, and choose your button. Paypal will then give you an HTML code for you to copy & paste to your site. You just continue the same steps for each item (when you get better you can just paste the code to Notepad & change the item name & price if needed). I did a test on each of my 3 pages from Freewebs and then again on Geocities. On my Freewebs page, the buttons didn't work because it's a free account (that's what it said when I added it). It did work on the Geocities pages. What I did was I added different carts on each page (different item names with different prices). I started on the 1st page & added the item to my cart, clicked to go to my info/policies page & added that item to my cart...and did the same on the banner page. At the end my cart had all 3 items together so it does work. I only did this as a test so if you plan on doing this on your own site, check for yourself. I have just read that the free geocities account doesn't allow shopping carts. If you want to have the paypal shopping cart you're going to have to pay for monthly hosting.
What I do is have both sites--I have the geocites site so it come up in Yahoo/Google searches & the FreeWebs site that my domain (JTstitches.com) from Go Daddy points to. And I pay less than $10 a year! For now I don't sell directly from my website, it has links to my- etsy shops, pictures, blog, myspace & a few other things. I'm doing it like this for now that way if/when I do start my own website business, my website will be out there on business cards, pens & word of mouth.
If you have anything to add or something is confusing, please let me know. I've written this from experience only & not from what I heard. If you have any questions please comment & if I know the answer I will add it. Good luck & I hope this helped someone!!

Flickr Pro

I just upgraded to Flickr's Pro account. I was trying to figure out if I really needed to pay $24.95 a year for the upgrade when Photobucket had what I needed. On my website I have categories "Scrubs, Bags..." that link to pictures of things I've done for other customers & stuff for sale. With Photobucket you can have as many categories as you would like but with the free Flickr they only allow 3 sets/categories. Since I have 6 categories I couldn't use the free Flickr account so I continued to use Photobucket. On Etsy I always see people using Flickr & saying how they like Flickr much better than Photobucket...I was trying to figure out why because I knew there had to be a reason why someone would pay when hey could get something for free. So I started using Flickr more often to see why. Here are a few reasons (not in any specific order) that did it for me other than unlimited everything that is listed on the upgrade page....

  • Multiple Sets/collections, like I said I need at least 6 & at some point I know I will need more.
  • Able to write a description for each picture. It can be a detailed description or it can be short & sweet.
  • View counts.
  • Comment on pictures.
  • Tagging pictures so they will come up in searches.
  • Profile. Another way for someone to find your website & ways to contact you if they see something they like.
  • My favorite is...The view of the set, "thumbnails or detail". I have my website links open to the thumbnail view so all my pics are seen. If you are window shopper & found my shop, if you see all my bags at the same time you might see one you like & continue to look at my stuff. On photobucket, the 1st page might not have a bag she likes so the window will close right away & bye-bye to http://JTstitches.com.

These are the main reasons why I decided on a Pro account. As I use it more I'm sure there will be much more added to the list. There are other things I like about Flickr but not the reason I chose the Pro account (like the forums). Check out my photos! http://flickr.com/photos/jtstitches/

Added 11/6/06;

Now that I've been using flickr for almost a month I'd like to add to my list. The above list are reasons I subscribed, I'd now like to add more things I really like since using flickr.

  • Add notes "in" the photos feature....really cool!
  • Privacy-with photobucket it's either all private or none. Flickr you can choose which photos are seen by family, friends &/or no one, and give a "Guest pass" to people to see certain photos.
  • Email a picture from your phone, love it!
  • Blog a picture. Set your blogger account info with flickr & other blog accounts. Also blogging about other people's photos.
  • Adding contacts & see what new photos they uploaded.
  • Maps. See what photos & flickr users in your area.

Added months later:

  • For me having a jailbroken iPhone there are a bunch of 3rd party applications (ie. Pushr, Mobile Flickr & iFlickr) makes it so easy to upload pictures, add a title, descriptions & tags to Flickr.
  • Camera finder. When I wanted to buy a new camera it was nice to see what kind of pictures a specific camera took.
  • Organize. Now that I have lots of sets & collections I love the organize feature.
  • Firefox Greasemonkey scripts for flickr. Adding a few of the GM flickr scripts makes viewing pictures faster. Instead of turning pages the pictures (or group threads) appear at the bottom when you get to it. I also like that when you leave a comment it adds where you found the picture--"Seen in Project 365 pool".

TGI Sunday

I'm so glad it's Sunday! I work in a nursing home full time & the full timers have to work every other weekend. So I hate *weekends* when it's my weekend to work, especially now with this new job. I work 13 hour shifts 7 am to 8 pm so my weekend is totally shot. I am so glad when it's over! I only work 3 days a week but when my weekends come....YUCK!
So far my new etsy shop www.JTstitches.etsy.com is going well (knock on wood). What I'm planning on doing differently with this shop than my other etsy shop is I'm going to make the items first then list them. With my other shop is I would make all my items after payment. My scrub tops & embroidered items will continue to be made after payment since they are custom made. I like this idea better that way I can ship it right away & the customer doesn't have to wait for me to make it....I HATE waiting on stuff I bought, so I figure that's how other feel too.
I'm going to be a very busy gal this week, I have an order for 9 Scrub tops! Very cool. This is an order I got from www.Lov.li (www.lov.li/users/jenni4)
Wow, I gotta go back to work, break is over. I'll be back later.

How to make a picture link for Blogger

Ok, I hope this makes sense.

Go to 'layout' (either from dashboard, customize or when you sign in, you'll see it).

You'll be at "Add & Arrange Page elements", and at the side "Add A Page Element" & click on that one.

Choose the "HTML/Java Script".

Make a title & put in the HTML code (scroll down to see how to make the HTML code).
After you save it, it will bring you back to the "Add & Arrange Page Elements". Put your mouse over the box, left click/hold, drag to where you want it. If you plan to keep it on the side you need to make the picture really small. For my site I had to resize (scale) an etsy banner to approx 247 X 32 (instead of the 760 X 100 that we use on Etsy). If you scroll down on the side, you will see my banner.

Is this clear? I hope so.

How to make your banner a link

Ok, I am trying to teach myself HTML codes & stuff like that. I was trying to figure out how people made their pics (and banners) links. I will try to explain how I do it....I use Photobucket.
I upload a picture to my Photobucket album. Photobucket has all the codes underneath, use the one "HTML Tag" like below.

Then you do this:

I'm not really sure how to do it for a blog like this one, that's why I had to show you the above directions as a picture, it wouldn't allow me to post the codes & 'publish post". I will try & see if I can figure out how to do it for blogger but this will work for Myspace & websites.
Hope it helps someone!

Started new job

Well I started that new job & it's taking me time to get in the groove. It's so nice to work one day, have a day off, work 3 days, have 2 days off....but it is weird.
I worked Sat, Sun & Monday 7am-8pm. My days went like this...got home 8:40, showered & got ready for bed, by that time it's about 9:30p & time to go to bed to do it all over again. I didn't turn my laptop for almost 3 days. I would of went crazy but thank goodness I have a pocket PC to get a little fix of the internet.
Well now I'm off for 2 days & I'm having free shipping on everything in my etsy shop all day today. I also have my featured items at 20% off, so if you buy one of those items today, you will get a nice discount!

Back from Atlantic City

Just a quick note to let everyone know I'm back from Atlantic City & I had a great time.

Out of town

I will be going out of town this weekend. I will be leaving Friday July 26 to Sunday 7/28 or Monday the 29th. I'll still be answering emails but shipping will be delayed a few days.

I'm going down to the Jersey Shore to the beach, and to Atlantic City for one of the evenings. Hope I win big on the black jack tables!! Wish me luck!

New Job & New uploads

Well, I just started a new job today. Instead of working 40 hours in 5 days, I will work 40 hours in 3 days, which means I will have 4 days off a week but still get a 40 hour pay check......which really means 4 days to sew!! I'm so psyched!

I also uploaded some new pics to photobucket & flickr. I put it in a category "Fabrics". I only put some up & will add all the time. If you see a fabric you like & want something made with it let me know. I don't buy large amounts of one pattern fabric so email me & let me know what you are thinking of & I'll see what I can do.
